Educational Opportunities

The MSO produces many educational activities, for all ages of learners. Programs include:

Young People's Concert!
Imagine Emens Auditorium filled with excited 4th and 5th graders? That's what happens at the annual Young People's Concert! The orchestra presents a concert especially tailored for these youngsters. Teachers tell us that this concert is the sole time that some students are exposed to live classical music! The 09/10 Young People's Concert, February 2, 2010.

We will play excerpts from The Planets . Dr. Ronald Kaitchuck faculty speak to us and show us the exciting new outer space discoveries.  We have improved the videography process that will show live real-time shots on the big screen behind the orchestra allowing the audience to see musicians and the conductor up close.  Our Young Artist Competition winner will display his/her talent.  Ronald McDonald will appear before the concert to help us learn about the evolution in proper etiquette and during the post concert exiting process.

MSO takes Music on the Road!
Did you know that the MSO offers FREE classroom experiences for students that relate directly to IN State Music Standards 6, 7, 8, and 9? Well now you do. Over the years, our Graduate String Quartet and Woodwind Quintet have presented programs to thousands of children in the Muncie area schools. We can't wait to share our passion for music with more students this year. The Woodwind Quintet is available to your school on Tuesday mornings, and the Graduate String Quartet is available on Wednesday mornings, both beginning the first week of October. These educational concerts are approximately 25 minutes in length, and work best in a small auditorium or choral or band room with groups of 50 or fewer. Again, these programs are completely FREE OF CHARGE! We hope schools will schedule one or both of these groups for your students during this year. Please phone the MSO office at 765.285.5531 to book a program (or 2!) Music education plays a tremendous role in developing well rounded students and adults. With school budgets stretched to the absolute limit, we hope all schools will take advantage of this opportunity. Looking forward to hearing from your school soon!

Prelude!
One hour prior to "classical" concerts, the assistant conductor presents informal and informative talks about the music to be played. It is a perfect way to tune up the ears and mind for the concert that follows.

Tickets and access for BSU Students
Any BSU student is entitled to a free ticket to any MSO concert, and rehearsals are open to BSU music students. Also, humanities classes are regularly provided with copies of program notes to discuss in classes, and are invited to rehearsals.
